BATTERY C, 1ST RHODE ISLAND LIGHT ARTILLERY

Battery C was mustered into Federal service on August 25, 1861 under the command of Captain William B. Weeden. On August 31st, it traveled to Washington, where it trained daily at Camp Sprague and Camp Randolph. Here, Battery C was assigned to General Morell’s brigade under Porter’s division of the Army of the Potomac.

With the Army of the Potomac, Battery C fought in some of the fiercest battles of the war. Its losses in men and horses were severe. Its record bears testimony to the bravery of its successive commanders—Captain William B. Weeden, Captain Richard Waterman, and First Lieutenant Jacob H. Lamb — and its men. By order of General Meade, the following battles, in which Battery C had borne meritorious service, were inscribed upon its colors: Yorktown; Hanover Court House; Mechanicsville; Gaines Mills; Malvern Hill; Second Bull Run; Antietam; Fredericksburg; Chancellorsville; Gettysburg; Rappahannock Station; Wilderness; Spotsylvania; Cold Harbor; Petersburg; Opequan; Fisher’s Hill; and, Cedar Creek.
